Otepää these days is not a winter stadium. It is an August–September camp on the loops that will hold a World Championship in February 2027. The Norwegian men have been there from 24 August to 6 September: Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen, Johannes Dale-Skjevdal, Sturla Holm Lægreid, Johan-Olav Botn, Isak Frey, Martin Uldal. This is not a sightseeing trip. It is a block after Sandnes and the Blink Festival, before the home summer championships. While the French are still packing for Corrençon, Norway is already closing the Estonian stretch.
Why a 2027 Worlds camp in September
Otepää hosts the World Championships on 8–21 February. After an Olympic year the World Cup does not call here in February — the Worlds do, for the first time after the Games break. Lægreid, Botn, Dale-Skjevdal are athletes who need those loops in their heads, not from a press-office map. A September rollerski camp does not replace January snow. It puts the terrain, the range wind and the village logistics in the brain. For the staff that is cheaper than arriving in February and asking which way it blows.
The grid tightens from here. 14–17 September in Oslo, then 18–20 September in Lygna for the Norwegian summer championships. The women’s elite gather in Lillehammer on those dates and then Lygna as well. October is Passo Lavazè and Antholz, with a Loop One stop in Munich. November is Geilo and the first starts. The World Cup opens on 24 November in Kontiolahti. Otepää to Finland is still almost three months. The feeling that “the season is far away” does not work for Norway this week: they are standing on a future Worlds range.
What to watch in Lygna
A summer championship is not a World Cup. It is an internal ledger where Botn, Lægreid and Dale-Skjevdal meet without a neutral protocol. For winter selection those starts weigh more in Norway than any Alpine contest. Anyone who misses the shooting in Lygna gets an October with a question attached. Anyone who closes it gets a calmer Lavazè. Otepää folds on 6 September. Lygna in two weeks already has bibs. For Norway the summer is over. What remains is shooting at their own championships, then snow in Italy.
