Norwegian summer championships in Lygna: Lægreid and Tandrevold win the pursuits

Lygna hosted the centre of Norwegian biathlon this weekend: on 18-20 September the national summer championships ran here — on rollerskis, with zeroing and a stadium as full as any in December. Sprints on Saturday, pursuits on Sunday. The outcome: Sturla Holm Lægreid took a full set of men's golds, and Ingrid Tandrevold was the best of the women. For the Norwegian team this is the last domestic ledger before winter selection — and the first real answer as to who arrived in October shape.

How the races went

Men's sprint, 7.5 kilometres: Lægreid hit ten out of ten and finished 22 seconds ahead of Johannes Dale-Skjevdal. Johan-Olav Botn, last winter's breakout, was third — with one miss and the worst standing shooting among the leaders. Sunday's pursuit repeated the picture: Lægreid shot clean twice and finished 34 seconds clear. "Summer bib numbers in Norway are not won by chance, but they don't guarantee December" — the old staff line held again. Among the women, Tandrevold won the sprint with one miss, then in the pursuit clawed back 40 seconds to Kristina Røiseland after the first shooting — and held first to the finish. Maren Kirkeeide was second both days.

What it means for selection

The Norwegian system is simple: summer starts count, but snow decides. Still, a failure in Lygna almost always means an October full of questions, and right now Lægreid and Tandrevold create none. The staff closes the Estonian camp in Otepää by the end of September — on the loops of the future 2027 World Championships — then moves to the Lavazè and Antholz glacier camps. The World Cup opens on 24 November with the men's individual in Kontiolahti. Exactly two months to the Finnish start.

Europe is working too

While Norway digested Lygna, the French women closed their second week in Corrençon, the Germans ran a control race in Oberhof, and the Swedes gathered in Idre. Russian biathletes are preparing for snow-based trials — the first control races come in October. For the elite, summer is officially over: glaciers next, then snow, then the score. Lygna wrote the first line of that score — and it is written in Norwegian names.
