After Bessans: Simon and Jacob won the Contest, the French camp turns to autumn

French summer biathlon does not end with a press release. It ends with a shooting night in Bessans. On 19 August the Haute Maurienne Vanoise stadium held the annual Contest: U19-to-senior mass starts, then the national-team shooting event. Julia Simon won the women’s super final, Corentin Jacob the men’s. Jeanmonnot and Bened finished behind Simon. Γ‰ric Perrot went out in the quarter-finals; Quentin Fillon Maillet did not start.

What the Contest showed β€” and what it did not

This is not a World Cup. There is no race ski loop in the winter sense, just shooting at the end of a summer camp. The French had been in Bessans for a block: the women’s camp opening, the men’s closing. Finns and a few Latvians sharing the venue stepped on the range too. Simon won a working evening, not a season. Jacob the same: an August range does not buy January, but for the staff it is cheaper than a control start on the road.

By 27 August the resort is out of bibs. Camp is down, athletes head to clubs and individual blocks. The next fork for national teams is usually the same: first snow, altitude, volume. Some go north, some stay in the Alps. The IBU calendar does not become a weekly race list in August. That month exists so shooting and rollerskis are not mixed with points.

A short pause before snow

For viewers Bessans is the last summer picture: the range, a super final, autographs after 16:20. For the staff it is a mark on who still holds position after a multi-week camp. Simon confirmed her shooting. Jacob closed the men’s grid. Fillon Maillet skipping the night is information, not a scandal: summer starts are not compulsory.

Season 2026/27 starts where it always does: snow, a first control, then the circuit. For now Savoie sends home not medals but a read: the French closed the summer block on a home contest, not a friendly race in someone else’s stadium. In a few weeks the talk will be skiing again. This week it is still the range.
