Three matches, three wins, one set dropped. In Ufa, Russia closed a friendly tournament unbeaten: Iran, Belarus, Cuba. For Konstantin Bryanskiy this was not a camp scrimmage. It was the first dense international block after FIVB lifted restrictions and reopened the men’s programme, including Volleyball Nations League 2027.
A lab, not a shop window
The visitors arrived with different mileage. Iran and Cuba had just played the Nations League and have continental championships in September. Russia assembled for this event, with a Dynamo Moscow core — the club Bryanskiy also coaches. New names got minutes: Roman Romanovskiy, Omar Kurbanov. Against Cuba the court sometimes looked like a Dynamo club night. The coach was testing combinations that might travel to official dates.
The table is clean. Iran, Cuba and Belarus each won once among themselves. Russia were the only side with three wins. One set conceded in three matches is the density people wanted on paper. It is still not the VNL. It is a check on whether serve-receive holds after a long pause and whether the block survives when the side across the net is not a Superleague neighbour.
What it means before VNL 2027
The real exam is later. Nations League 2027 is the first proper run against top sides. Ufa does not replace that. It answers a simpler question: can the group be rebuilt, given three different opponents in a short window, without three different crises. For now the answer is yes.
The calendar tightens from here. September is continental events for the others; for Russia it is the club season and targeted camps. Bryanskiy leaves Ufa with combinations and a read on which newcomers hold when the whistle is friendly in name and competitive in tempo. Three wins can go on a wall. They start to mean something when the other side of the net is a VNL top-half side, not Iran on a control date.
