On 5 October the Russian Volleyball Federation published a plain fact: the women’s team will be at the 2027 World Championship. The same day the FIVB closed a list of 32 teams. The United States and Canada host, from 20 August to 5 September. The cities named by the federation are Anaheim, Montreal, Omaha, Orlando and Quebec.
Russia did not qualify by winning a playoff. The federation site says the place came from 11th in the FIVB world ranking on 5 October 2026. Fourteen of the berths in this field are for teams that missed the continental qualifiers and sat highest in that ranking. Hosts, the world champions and the continental winners took their lines separately.
What changes, and what does not
The federation calls it a return after nine years. The format matches the 2025 World Championship: eight groups, two from each into the knockout. Italy are listed as the defending champions. Turkey, Serbia and Poland come in as the European medallists. Brazil, Argentina and Colombia come from South America. The full list of 32 is on the federation site. A second write-up that shuffles a few names is not a reason to retype the field from memory. The FIVB release of 5 October is the document the federation cites.
The European Championship in Istanbul, where Turkey beat Italy in the final, is not this story. That tournament is finished. The next major date that can actually go on a calendar for this team is August 2027, not an October club week.
That is still almost a year away. The ranking that produced the berth was 11th on 5 October. It can move before the draw if teams play official matches, and it can sit still if they do not. Nobody has named a squad for Anaheim on 12 October. This week’s news is not a roster. It is a line in a list of 32, earned by ranking rather than by an October playoff.
