Istanbul takes the bracket. Two quarter-finals at Sinan Erdem: Poland vs Netherlands at 16:00, Turkey vs Germany at 19:00. The tournament runs to 6 September; the Saturday semis are already here. The hosts are defending European champions and fresh 2026 Nations League winners. The poster is home. The meaning is not: Germany needed 3-2 to get past Belgium in the last 16, and that is not a side that turns up to hand over the hall. Vargas will be on the court. The room will be against the visitors. That is not enough if serve-receive does not hold a German serve.
Who plays whom next
Turkey/Germany winner meets Serbia. Serbia finished Greece 3-0 in Brno on Wednesday — 25-14, 25-20, 25-17, Bošković on 17. Poland/Netherlands winner meets Italy. Italy are already in the semis, but through 3-1 against Sweden and 42 points from Isabelle Haak. So today’s Istanbul ties do not cut “one of eight”. They cut who gets the cleaner semi-final.
Poland swept Portugal. The Netherlands beat Slovenia 3-2. The Dutch have already shown they can park a favourite in five. Poland arrived as a stable European programme with no right to “ease in”. The afternoon match in Istanbul is not a warm-up for Vargas at night. It is the first ticket to Saturday.
What Turkey need tonight
A home quarter-final at this event often breaks on the first set, not the block: the hall hurries, the opponent hangs on, and at 20-18 the nerve is already there. Germany can live in a long match — Belgium saw it. Turkey need a short night: their own pass, their own serve, no fifth set before a semi a day later. A 3-0 and the bracket looks clean. A 3-2 and the legs against Bošković on Saturday are different. Whistle at 19:00. Poland and the Netherlands still come first.
