His camp says he will skip the Canadian Open. The target is the Cincinnati Open (Aug 13–23), where he is defending champion, then the US Open title defense. Ranking points matter too: the layoff cost him No. 2 while Sinner collected Wimbledon and stretched the gap.
Why Sinner leads the odds
Andy Roddick put it bluntly on Served: even if Alcaraz returns, Sinner remains the overwhelming New York favorite. The logic is match reps. The Italian has stacked a low-loss season, won a second Wimbledon and a fifth major at 24. Hard courts are his habitat.
What to watch now
About three weeks remain before Cincinnati. Alcaraz has posted practice clips — encouraging, not the same as matches. The US Open opens late August. If he sharpens in one or two Ohio weeks, New York becomes a No. 1 duel again. If not, it is Sinner's tournament to lose.
