Enzo Fernández joins City for £125m as Premier League spending hits £3.48bn

Tuesday 1 September, 11pm in London. The window did not close on a bench signing. It closed on a number that still sounded fictional two summers ago. Enzo Fernández left Chelsea for Manchester City at £125m — a joint British record. He is City’s piece of a four-deal £100m club: Elliot Anderson already in, and around the league Morgan Rogers at £117m from Villa to Chelsea and Bradley Barcola from PSG to Liverpool at £107m, rising to £123m with add-ons.

Why the fee now looks like the floor

City spent about £440m. This is not Pep’s window. Guardiola left after a decade; Enzo Maresca inherits a rebuilt squad and immediate pressure. Chelsea spent around £342m and funded it with exits: Fernández, plus Liam Delap to Forest for up to £50m after three goals in blue. On deadline day City added Iliman Ndiaye from Everton. Newcastle landed Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille for £51m — an eighth summer arrival after Howe made way for Jaissle and Gordon, Guimarães and Tonali left. Villa paid PSG about £47m for 18-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye and took Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton.

Sky Sports has Europe’s top five as: Premier League £3.48bn, Serie A £843.6m, La Liga £603.5m, Bundesliga £507.6m, Ligue 1 £490.6m. England is not slightly ahead. England is in another weight class.

What it changes by Friday

The market is done arguing. The calendar is not. Friday is Ipswich versus Liverpool. Sunday is Arsenal versus Chelsea. City host Coventry on Saturday. Saudi’s window runs to 6 September, and Arsenal still have the Martinelli–Al-Hilal file open. For the Premier League the cheque is already written. £125m for Enzo is not the shock. The shock is that after a day like that the league just turns the page and plays on Friday.
