A season without Kagiyama and Sakamoto: Tokyo opens a generation change

Yuma Kagiyama said it straight: he is sitting out 2026/27. He wants to understand what makes skating special, take on new challenges, look at himself. After Milan-Cortina he has two silvers — individual and team, a second Games in that metal. Kaori Sakamoto, a four-time world champion, has closed her career. Japanese ice in September looks different to February. The Kinoshita Cup is not “just a Challenger”. It is the first home poster without those two names.

Who is left on this ice

Shun Sato climbed from ninth in the short to bronze in Milan. That is now the Japanese men’s marker while Kagiyama is away. Kao Miura and Rio Nakata are the next line, and a Challenger is not a box-tick for them: without Kagiyama in the protocol, national hierarchy moves faster. Among the women Mao Shimada has not been “a hope” for a while. With Sakamoto gone she is the home centre of the poster. Ami Nakai and Yuna Aoki get minutes the density at the top used to eat. This is not a federation being kind. It is a hole that has to be closed with marks, not interviews.

Neutral Russian starts in Tokyo do not fill that vacuum. They sharpen the picture. Gumennik, Semenenko, Ignatova — skaters the Japanese will still meet in the season. If Sato and Shimada look like “still easing in” on Friday, the talk about Kagiyama’s pause becomes talk about a stalled opening.

What the pause means before Grand Prix

Kagiyama did not announce a retirement. He announced a year without starts. For the ISU that is one fewer big name in the autumn series. For Japan it is a test of whether the programme can live without the two people broadcasts were built around. Next on the Challenger map: pairs in Norwood, Lombardia, Nebelhorn. Grand Prix de France in Angers is 23–25 October. Whoever leaves Tokyo with a plus becomes the face of autumn. Whoever leaves with a minus gets a month of questions about why the generation change began with a hole in the protocol, not a new free skate. Tomorrow is the short. Kagiyama’s pause is no longer the news in it. The news is who fills it.
