Reese grabs 26 rebounds in a WNBA record night as Dream beat Sparks 78-71

Twenty-six rebounds in a night. Eight of them offensive. On 25 August in Los Angeles Angel Reese reset the WNBA single-game rebounding record and the league’s single-season mark in the same game. Atlanta left with a 78-71 win. Nneka Ogwumike answered with 27 points and 16 boards — one of her last home nights in a Sparks shirt — and it still was not enough.

How Dream closed it

First quarter to the visitors, 20-15. Second to the hosts, 22-16, 36-37 at half. Dream took the third 26-18; the fourth finished 16-16. Reese was not the only edge: Atlanta 48 rebounds to 32, 17 assists, 14 turnovers. Los Angeles shot 38 percent and 16 percent from three. The bench scored 15, all Cameron Brink, plus eight rebounds, three steals and five blocks. Hamby had 15. Eleven turnovers. You do not win that glass against Reese.

It is not a one-off. ESPN has her on a third straight 20-and-10, 26 double-doubles this season, ten 20-10 nights. She had ten of those combined in her first two years. Allisha Gray leads Atlanta at 19.4 points, Rhyne Howard 18.2. Third-best offence in the league, franchise scoring record broken twice, 124 against these same Sparks.

The field is set, the seeding is not

The regular season runs to 24 September. All eight playoff spots are taken. Dallas locked the last ticket on Tuesday. The field: Minnesota, Golden State, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Indiana, New York, Washington, Dallas. Portland is out. Tonight, 27 August, the Liberty host the Valkyries — seeding, not survival. New York has won 10 of 13; Stewart is at 20.8 points and 8.1 boards. Fiebich came back from a foot injury and posted 20-5-5 against Indiana.

Reese’s record does not redraw the table in one night. It changes the conversation: Dream are not an August “project”. They have a player who takes the misses other teams leave. A month of regular season remains. The glass is no longer theoretical.
